President's Message

Greetings,

As our nation continues to monitor the status of our security, I want to remind us all of the responsibilities of our University community. We are all connected to world events because of our social and intellectual engagement. Additionally, a number of our students, staff, and faculty are directly affected by having family members and friends who live in volatile regions of the world or who serve in the military.

The right to freedom of expression is paramount at the University of Michigan, and I trust we will set an ongoing example for the nation of passionate debate conducted with respectful civility. This is a hallmark of our educational system, and one of which I am most proud.

I hope, too, that we will continue to reach out to one another and to our faculty experts as we seek greater understanding about world events.

You may wish to seek counseling services or other guidance to help you deal with these global issues that can have such a personal impact, so I have attached links to available campus resources at the conclusion of this message. We have staff and faculty ready to answer questions or help in whatever way they can.

We are continuing to help ensure the safety and security of our campuses; any updates on security measures will be on the University Gateway. Please know that the welfare of our community will remain a top priority for me.

Mary Sue Coleman

President, University of Michigan
